The Story Behind Bohemian’s Best Salsa - Where the Adventure Began

Bohemians Best Salsa our story

Hello, my name is Michelle Jansky. I was born and raised in the small country town of Wharton, Texas, where I grew up alongside my parents and three older brothers.

From an early age, we learned how to hunt, fish, garden, cook, and can our own food. Hard work and self-sufficiency weren’t just values — they were part of everyday life.

Those lessons became the foundation of everything I do today.

The Meaning Behind the Name

Bohemian’s Best Salsa is named in honor of my father, who was full-blooded Bohemian.

When people ask what a Bohemian knows about making salsa, I like to smile and say — what doesn’t a Bohemian know about cooking, canning, and creating great food?

Story behind Bohemian’s Best Salsa

The Moment That Started It All

In 2015, while working at a small country smokehouse just outside my hometown, I started by bring a jar of homemade salsa that my mom and I had made.

One day, my manager noticed it and asked where I got it. After trying it, he looked at me and said:
“Why aren’t you selling this?”I hadn’t thought about it before. It was just something we made for ourselves.

The next week I brought in a box of miscellaneous jars, and we opened one for customers to sample.  Within three days, nine jars were gone. That was the beginning.

Growing Bohemian's Best, One Jar at a Time

My mom and I started making salsa every Saturday.

Within a month, we were producing three cases a week just to keep up with demand. Customers began coming in from out of town asking where else they could find it.

For over a year, we continued making and selling salsa directly through the store — growing one jar at a time.

No Shortcuts ~ No Frozen ~ No Fillers.

When it came time to scale production, we met with a commercial kitchen to begin professional canning.

They walked us through their normal process — ingredients prepped in bulk, vegetables frozen, efficiency first.  That’s how most products are made.  But that’s not how our family made salsa.

Fresh ingredients were always the foundation of our recipe. The flavor, the texture, the way it brought people back for more — it all came from doing it the right way.  So we made a decision.  If it couldn’t be made fresh, we wouldn’t make it there.  They explained it would cost more to produce.  We agreed.

“Growing up, we made salsa from fresh ingredients straight from our family garden.  I wanted to continue that tradition but add something more — bold, rich flavor.  Through years of experimenting with different pepper varieties, I developed the recipe that is now Bohemian’s Best Salsa.

Fresh ingredients, carefully selected peppers, and no shortcuts — that’s what makes our salsa different.

Building It the Right Way

After placing my first production order, I returned to the same store — this time with professionally manufactured jars.

From there, I began visiting small, family-owned stores across Southeast Texas, offering samples and building relationships.

Within the first year, Bohemian’s Best Salsa was in 11 stores.  Over time, that number grew to 58 stores across Texas.  Along the way, I began participating in market days, festivals, and community events across Texas.

These experiences allowed me to share my salsa with new communities and meet incredible people who supported this journey.

Looking Ahead

Today, Bohemian’s Best Salsa continues to grow, with plans to expand into new products like tomatillo salsa and even a Bloody Mary mix.
What started as a family recipe continues to grow — one jar at a time.

A Journey Made Possible by Many

I’ve been fortunate to have support from so many people along the way — family, friends, and community members who believed in what I was building.  I am especially grateful to my children for their patience and support through every step of this journey.

Most importantly, I thank God for giving me the courage and determination to pursue this dream.
